How to call France from the US, step by step
From the US, dial 011, then France's country code 33, then the 9-digit number without its leading 0. From a mobile, dial +33 and the 9 digits.
Dial 011
The exit code for calls leaving the US or Canada. On a mobile, press and hold 0 to type + instead, which works from any country.
Dial 33
France's country code. Together with the exit code: 011 33 from a US landline, +33 from a mobile.
Drop the leading 0
French numbers are written as five pairs starting with 0, like 01 99 00 12 34. From abroad, leave out that first 0: 1 99 00 12 34.
Dial the remaining 9 digits
The first digit says where the line is: 1 for Paris, 2 to 5 for the regions, 6 or 7 for a mobile, 9 for an internet-based line.

Landline or mobile? How to tell in France
French mobiles start with 06 or 07. Landlines start with 01 (Paris and Île-de-France), 02 (north-west), 03 (north-east), 04 (south-east) or 05 (south-west). A 09 number is an internet box or VoIP line and can be anywhere in France. 08 numbers are service lines, and 0800 is free from inside France.

Best time to call a business in France
Avoid 12 pm to 2 pm: lunch is a real break and many small businesses close their line. France is 6 hours ahead of New York and 9 ahead of Los Angeles for most of the year. August is quiet, with many businesses closed for two or three weeks.

Can you call France for free?
WhatsApp is widely used in France, and FaceTime Audio works between iPhones. It only works if the person you are calling has the same app and a data connection, and it cannot reach a landline, a switchboard or a business that only answers its phone line.
WhatsApp, FaceTime
Free over Wi-Fi or mobile data, as long as both people have the app installed and are online.
Not for landlines or businesses
An app call can't reach a landline, an office switchboard or anyone who isn't on the app. Most businesses still answer on their phone line.
A real call, at a fair rate
For everything else, call the number. With Allo, France landlines are from $0.01/min and mobiles from $0.05/min.

France's country code is +33. From the US, dial 011 33 before the number. From a mobile anywhere, +33 does the same job.
From a US or Canadian landline, dial 011 (the exit code), 33 (the country code), then the number: 011 33 1 99 00 12 34. From most other countries, the exit code is 00 instead of 011.
Press and hold 0 to type +, then 33 and the number: +33 1 99 00 12 34. The + works from any country, so it's the safest way to save a French number in your contacts.

A mobile written 06 39 98 12 34 is dialed 011 33 6 39 98 12 34 from a US landline, or +33 6 39 98 12 34 from a mobile. Paste any number into the formatter to see which kind it is.
