How to call the UK from the US, step by step
From the US, dial 011, then the UK's country code 44, then the number without its leading 0. From a mobile, dial +44 and the number without the 0.
Dial 011
The exit code for calls leaving the US or Canada. On a mobile, press and hold 0 to type + instead, which works from any country.
Dial 44
The UK's country code. Together with the exit code: 011 44 from a US landline, +44 from a mobile.
Drop the leading 0
UK numbers are written with a 0 at the front (020 for London, 07 for mobiles). That 0 is only dialed inside the UK. From abroad, 020 becomes 20 and 07700 becomes 7700.
Dial the rest of the number
Most UK numbers are 10 digits once the 0 is gone, like 20 7946 0123 for London or 7700 900123 for a mobile.

Landline or mobile? How to tell in the UK
UK mobiles start with 07 (7 from abroad). Landlines start with 01 or 02, and the digits after tell you the town: 020 London, 0161 Manchester, 0121 Birmingham. Numbers starting with 03 are charged like landlines anywhere in the UK, and 0800 and 0808 are free to call from inside the UK only.

Can you call the UK for free?
WhatsApp is the default messaging app in the UK, and FaceTime Audio works between iPhones. It only works if the person you are calling has the same app and a data connection, and it cannot reach a landline, a switchboard or a business that only answers its phone line.
WhatsApp, FaceTime
Free over Wi-Fi or mobile data, as long as both people have the app installed and are online.
Not for landlines or businesses
An app call can't reach a landline, an office switchboard or anyone who isn't on the app. Most businesses still answer on their phone line.
A real call, at a fair rate
For everything else, call the number. With Allo, the UK landlines are from $0.20/min and mobiles from $0.02/min.

Calling the UK: your questions
The UK's country code is +44. From the US, dial 011 44 before the number. From a mobile anywhere, +44 does the same job.
From a US or Canadian landline, dial 011 (the exit code), 44 (the country code), then the number: 011 44 20 7946 0123. From most other countries, the exit code is 00 instead of 011.
Press and hold 0 to type +, then 44 and the number: +44 20 7946 0123. The + works from any country, so it's the safest way to save a UK number in your contacts.
UK mobiles start with 07 (7 from abroad). A landline written 020 7946 0123 at home is dialed 011 44 20 7946 0123 from the US, or +44 20 7946 0123 from a mobile.

Yes, with an app: WhatsApp is the default messaging app in the UK, and FaceTime Audio works between iPhones. It only works if the person you are calling has the same app and a data connection, and it cannot reach a landline, a switchboard or a business that only answers its phone line. To reach anyone else, place a regular call.
Often not. 0800 and 0808 numbers are free from inside the UK, but many are not reachable from abroad, or are charged at an international rate. Look for a regular 020, 01 or 03 number on the company's site instead.
