What is a softphone?

A softphone is a software application that lets you make and receive phone calls from a computer, tablet or smartphone over the internet. It replaces a physical desk phone with an app, using the device's microphone and speakers or a headset.

How it works

The softphone signs in to a VoIP provider or phone system with your user account, usually over SIP or the provider's own protocol. Your number and extension then ring in the app.

It shows a dial pad, contacts and call controls such as hold, transfer, mute and record. Many also handle texts, voicemail and call history.

Audio quality depends on the network and on the headset, so a wired or good wireless headset is the main hardware worth buying.

Why it matters

01

No desk phones

Every employee already has a laptop and a mobile, which is all a softphone needs.

02

Calls in context

A desktop app can sit next to the CRM and dial numbers with a click.

03

Mobility

The same business line goes wherever the laptop or phone goes.

Allo and Softphone

Allo is a softphone for teams: apps for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, plus a Chrome extension to call from your CRM.
